Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Slab Box Medium: Clay Evaluation: I liked how much freedom was given on this project. I disliked how long it took to add all of the designs to the outer layers of the project. A strength was creating designs to add to the outer part of the project, even adding parts that stick out. A weakness was creating a firm handle for the project. The shape of the project adds originality to the box as a whole, with the outer loop coming from it. The various textures added to the box create a feeling of symmetry to the box. The space on the box is well distributed and doesn't make it feel too cluttered or open. The space is balanced well, having some areas crowded and some open. The lines of the box help to apply movement, as does the slab wrapping around the project and creating the loop.

Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Cookie Jar Medium: Clay Evaluation: I liked how much freedom we had to design this project. I disliked that we had a requirement to fit a certain amount in the jar, when its hard to dictate size in a unit of cookies. I did well at creating the pice by adding the shape of a burger. I could of made the lid fit the project a bit better. The shape of the project allows the viewer to clearly see what it's supposed to be. The line on the project shows the different ingredients on the burger. The space on the burger is well balanced from layer to layer. The different layers add movement around the burger. The balance of the project overall makes it look unified as a whole. The Course: Potter
Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Coiling Medium: Clay Evaluation: I disliked how time consuming this project was, having to make each coil individually. I liked how the coils add a lot of movement to the project. A strength was being able to firmly attach the coils to the project, but a weakness was being able to make the coils quickly. The shape of the project is a bit lopsided, which adds character to the piece. The form is also not a perfect circle, which adds feeling and character as well. The space for the coils is also well done. There's repetition in the piece with how the layers of coils build up. Course: Potter
Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Whistle Medium: Clay Evaluation: I liked being able to make something that makes sound, but I disliked how difficult it was to make it work. A strength was creating a form to look like a cow, but a weakness was making it work as a whistle. I did end up getting it to work after some time. A strong learning moment for this project was figuring out how to make the whistle work. I added color the project by painting it black and white to compliment it being a cow. Its shape also helped compliment it being a cow as well, including the addition of the ears. There's texture on the back of the cow at the end of its tail to signify hair. The black on the cows back represents the pattern of black dots that cows often have. The space for the painting of the cow is well distributed to make it look balanced. Course: Potter
Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Mug Medium: Clay Evaluation: I disliked how difficult it was to keep the mug from caving in on itself for this project, but I liked being able to use the textures. I could improve on building a handle, as that was a big weakness for this project. A strength was blending the chain texture to look natural. If I did this project again, I would make the handle higher up. This project has good texture with the chain going around it. IT also has good form with the lowering of the handle. The spacing was also well used for separating the chain and lowering the handle. The chain pattern creates movement around the mug. Course: Potter
Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Stamp Medium: Clay Evaluation: I disliked how we never ended up using the stamps in this project. I liked how we had to carefully mold the clay to get the proper shapes. I could of cleaned this project up a bit to make it appear smoother, and could of crafted a better handle. I did well at making it seem original to the other stamps with the handle. I had a curved and sharp shape to the handle. The handles form and smooth texture also added a certain feel to the piece. The slight curve to the handle helps give a feeling of movement, and the handle helps to balance the squareness of the stamp. Course: Potter
Artist: Samantha Schmidt Teacher: Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: Zentangle Medium: Clay Evaluation: I disliked how this project didn't create anything that could be used, like a mug or cookie jar. I did like how much detail could be put into the project. I needed improvement in creating smooth lines but did well at thinking of a design. I learned how to carve clay during this project. If I could do this project differently I'd of probably added more curved lines to the project, and worried less about smaller details, trying to make it look more bubbly. I did well at creating different kinds of lines in this project, like diagonal lines and curves. I did well at adding emphasis on shape by making certain parts 3D. I also used my space well, filling large areas with lots of detail, but then left some areas open to balance it out. The curved lines in the slab create a sense of movement, and the various patterns create variety within the piece. |
